A Comparison of India's Spinners

Here's a comparison of the pitch map for R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha in England's first innings at Ahmedabad. Ashwin took 3/80 (27 overs) while Ojha took 5/45 (22.2 overs)

a graphic representation of facts that people might already have suspected. certainly the two spinners themselves seemed aware, going by the joint interview to Cricinfo just before the Ahmedabad Test.

i think his consistency should strengthen the case to play Ojha abroad, when playing the lone spinner. curiously, he's out of favour with MS Dhoni - like we saw in Australia, and even in the 1st innings here.

MSD brought Ojha back for 1 over (where he duely got Bresnan out with a peach), and immediately replaced him with Ashwin to try and get lefty Broad out. That having failed, he brought Ojha back again, who removed Prior immediately. very strange bias.

  2. I'm not sure that he's out of favor. It may just be that given that none of the fast bowlers can bat, if only 1 spinner is played, the one who can bat is preferred over the one who can't

fair enough - he's been less preferred anyway, and repeatedly. one or 2 Tests is alright, but all 4 in Australia was puzzling. Ashwin has done nothing to suggest that he makes up for the profligacy in his bowling, with the bat.
